Creating Your Cat's Hurricane and Disaster Plan

Cat in a storm!

This is the time of the year we start paying more attention to weather updates and start thinking about Hurricanes! Most of us have some type of disaster plan in place and an idea of the supplies we need to keep on hand. Our cats also need to have their plan in place in the event of an emergency.

If your cat is anything like mine, their idea when disaster strikes is to shelter in place under the middle of the bed. They will expect their meals to be delivered to them and put under the bed. If they need to use the litter box, they’ll want an escort to their box so they can slink along beside you and feel safe.

So, while your cat thinks they have their plan in place, it is still up to you as a cat parent to finalize the details to ensure their safety in the event of a hurricane. We need to have the following on hand.

· Know your Evacuation and Flood Zone. Also know the surrounding zones around your home in case they are a higher evacuation zone or prone to flooding.

· Plan where you can go in the event of an evacuation.

· Know which hotels and motels accept cats. La Quinta, Best Western and many others accept cats. Book reservations online and ahead of time.

· Have enough cat food, treats and litter on hand for 5+ days.

· Have a gallon of water per day for your cats.

· Cat’s First Aid kit.

· Cat’s medications.

· Cat’s Medical Records.

· Collar, harness, and leash.

· Cat Carrier

· Their toys and blanket

· If you are sheltering in place keep your cats secure in their carrier and close to you during the storm.

By being prepared ahead of time, you won’t be as stressed, and your cat will be much more relaxed enjoying their sojourn under the bed while sheltering in place with their meals delivered to them in a timely manner.
